BEING ECOFRIENDLY

BEING ECOFRIENDLY

Here are the do’s and don’ts to be eco-responsible:

Do not wash in the lake
Your hair, your dog and your children! Do not pour dishwater into the lake! Detergents, soaps and shampoos cause an increase in algae, a decrease in oxygen and kill fish.

Do not cut trees or defoliate shrubs.
This leads to land erosion into the lake. The lack of a natural shoreline reduces water quality, increases algae and kills fish.  The first 10 meters are preserved in their natural state are essential to the survival of the lake: “Please plant shrubs”.

Do not bring sand or earth for filling
You may introduce bacteria or chemicals from somewhere else and change the lakes' natural survival mechanisms.

Do not spill gas or oil when filling engines.
One gallon of oil can cover 4 acres of water and never leave the lake. Service your engines and refuel away from the lake as much as possible. Pour the fuel carefully using a wide funnel and stop before it overflows.

Do not use fertilizers or pesticides within 100 meters of the lake.
Fertilizers flow into the lake causing algae blooms, leading to reduced oxygen and fish deaths. Pesticides can poison the lake.

Do not pour paint, oil or toxic substances down the drains as they could end up in the lake.

Do not throw trash near the lake or in the lake, not even a cigarette butt.
Check your septic system and make sure it meets health and safety standards. Sewage carries bacteria and viruses. Inadequate septic systems pose a serious danger to everyone's health.

Avoid bleaching products and antibacterial soaps that disrupt the functioning of septic tanks.

Use a phosphate-free detergent in your home or cottage.
Phosphates do not “decompose” and are found in excess in the ecological cycle.

Build a dock that allows water to flow freely.
Any blockage of water movement results in erosion and sediment buildup.

Report any water pollution problems to the relevant authorities and the association.
