Lac Long & Lac Morissette Association
Eutrophication is a natural and progressive process of "aging" of lakes which leads to a deterioration of their health. It typically takes hundreds of years to go from a clear, deep lake (oligotrophic) to a swampy, filled-in lake (eutrophic), but this process can be accelerated by human activities.
Things everyone can do to prevent eutrophication:
- Eliminate the use of phosphate-containing products such as fertilizers and certain cleaning products
- Protect the littoral zone to prevent shoreline erosion
- Ensure proper septic system maintenance
- Minimize shoreline erosion and bottom mixing by reducing boat speeds and wakes.
The state of Lac Long and Lac Morissette are currently considered oligomesothrophic according to available data.
