Eutrophication

Eutrophication of lakes

leutro

Eutrophication is a natural and progressive process of "aging" of lakes which leads to a deterioration of their health. It typically takes hundreds of years to go from a clear, deep lake (oligotrophic) to a swampy, filled-in lake (eutrophic), but this process can be accelerated by human activities.

Things everyone can do to prevent eutrophication:

        1. Eliminate the use of phosphate-containing products such as fertilizers and certain cleaning products
        2. Protect the littoral zone to prevent shoreline erosion
        3. Ensure proper septic system maintenance
        4. Minimize shoreline erosion and bottom mixing by reducing boat speeds and wakes.

The state of Lac Long and Lac Morissette are currently considered oligomesothrophic according to available data.
