Fireworks and their Risks
We know some people enjoy celebrating with fireworks, but we would like to remind you that their use is regulated for the safety of our community and environment. According to SOPFEU, fireworks cause an average of three forest fires per year. In addition to the fire risks, there are other potential harms to consider.
- Fireworks are prohibited within the 10-15 m shoreline protection zone (riparian zone) because they release harmful particles into lakes.
-They can cause significant stress to domestic and wild animals due to their sudden and unpredictable noise and light. This may cause animals to flee, putting them in danger. Debris from fireworks can also pose a risk to wildlife.
-Fireworks may also be distressing for individuals living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
We encourage everyone to consider safer ways to celebrate that don’t impact neighbours or the environment.
If you are still inclined to set off Pyrotechnics (Consumer Fireworks), strict guidelines MUST be respected as per the Blue Sea Municipality regulations 2021-082, Division B, Part 5, 5.1.1.4.
